Each sinus or cavity in the skull has an opening that allows free exchange of mucus and air. Each sinus is joined to the other by a mucous membrane lining. When there is an infection like hay fever or a disease like asthma, these sinuses and the lining become inflamed, causing air and mucus to be blocked inside or a vacuum to be created. This can cause pressure on the sinus walls, causing severe pain. Millions of dollars are spent for sinus medications and sinus research.

3. Persistent cough. This is mainly caused by increased levels of post nasal drip down the throat. Normal mucus secretion is thin and clear. 4. Sore throat. This is closely associated with mucus draining down the throat as coughing episodes can lead to inflammation and bacterial infection of the throat.

Antibiotics can be effective for treatment of bacterial infection but in the case of a viral infection, an anti-fungal drug can be prescribed. On top of that, a decongestant may be prescribed together to assist in reducing the inflammation. For thinning the mucus, an expectorant can be used in conjunction with antihistamines, which is solely for inflammation. If sinusitis persists, then nasal steroid may be used to promote mucus drainage and treatment of the swelling.

However, if a bacterial infection is diagnosed, antibiotics have to be prescribed as well. Sometimes the Eustachian tubes are blocked. In such instances, a steroid nasal spray is an effective medication to resolve the problem.

Classification of sinusitis 1. Mild infection 2. Acute infection 3. Chronic infection Mild sinusitis is present if symptoms are not serious. Often, the patient is able to tolerate the slight discomforts experienced. In most instances, there is not a need for any medication since most people are able to recover on their own.

Sinus infections can cause a lot of pain and discomfort. Sometimes, the infection may also lead to some brain infections or other chronic problems. Though there is no effective remedy for sinus infections, a lot of comfort can be gained by treating the sinus symptoms like headaches, nasal discharge, nasal blocking, runny nose, ear/neck/cheek/jaw pain, swelling of eyelids, etc. However, acute or chronic sinus infections require prolonged treatments, comprised of antibiotics or therapies like saline nasal rinses, topical/oral decongestants, antihistamines, mucolytic agents, and intranasal corticosteroids.

A person can develop a sinus infection if it takes too long a time to recover from the common cold or viral influenza. The main cause of the problem is nasal congestion associated with both illnesses. The blockage of the nasal passages causes poor ventilation of the sinuses. The clogged sinuses provide the ideal environment for bacteria to multiply. Bacterial sinusitis often develops when the immune system of the person is not functional at its optimum.

For recurrent sinusitis, Ayurvedic compounds like Laghu Malini Vasant, Madhu Malini Vasant and Suvarna Malini Vasant are used along with Pippali (Piper longum). A special preparation called Chausashtha Pippali is used in a gradually increasing dose, followed by a gradually decreasing dose. Sometimes, several courses of these medicines are required.

Medicated ghee containing Chafa (Michelia champaka), Dadim (Pomegranate) flowers, Sabja (Canna edulus) leaves, Kanher (Nerium indicum) leaves, Durva (Cynodon dactylon), Haridra (turmeric) and Keshar (Crocus sativus) is used as nasal drop for obtaining immediate relief from symptoms.

Sinusitis is an infection of the mucous membranes lining the sinuses, which are present in and around the face. Sinusitis may be acute or chronic. Acute sinusitis may improve on its own, but chronic sinusitis usually requires treatment.

Oral medication is advised of ghee treated with Haridra (turmeric), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Vishwa (Zinziber officinale), Karanj (Pongamia pinnata), Renukabeej (Vitex negundo), and Yava-Kshar. Medicated ghee containing Hinga (Ferula narthex), Yava-Kshar, Deodar (Cedrus deodara) is also recommended.

The objective of providing treatments to sinusitis is to remove the often painful and uncomfortable symptoms that might lead to sinus infection. We have to consider the risk factors before embarking on the treatments for sinusitis as they usually occur right after a cold or flu. Allergies to dust, pet, pollen, cigarette smoke, etc can cause sinusitis but the less common factors are due to the deficiencies of the immune system and structural deformities for instant polyps, tumors, bone spurs and a deviated septum.

Sinus infections can also be treated by some home remedies. A lot of relief can be obtained by inhaling steam from a vaporizer or a bowl of hot water. Applying a hot or a cold compress over the inflamed area would also provide relief. A decoction of mustard seed powder and water, instilled in the nostrils; eating jalapeno peppers; drinking juice of ripe grapes; applying a paste of cinnamon and water on the forehead; applying paste of ginger and water/milk on the forehead; applying paste of basil leaves, cloves, and dried ginger on the forehead; inhaling steam of eucalyptus oil; and drinking warm tea are all found to be effective in providing some relief. Drinking a lot of water and other fluids would also help. A great deal of rest is also required. However, it is better to consult a specialist if the infection persists.

Sinusitis treatment

There are various effective treatments for sinus infection but before we venture into the form of treatment, a fundamental understanding of sinusitis is essential. Basically, it is the inflammation of the sinus cavities that can result from viral, fungus or bacterial infection as well as environmental and allergic reaction. It can be caused by structural deformities too.

Several Ayurvedic formulations are used for the treatment of sinusitis. Tribhuvankirti, Sitopaladi, Godanti Bhasma, Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Bhallatak Parpati, Shrung Bhasma and Sanjeevani vati are some of the well known compounds. Sookshma Triphala, Chaturbhuj Ras, and Gandhak Rasayan are used for symptoms like fever and inflammation. Most patients get significant relief in a period of two to six weeks.

Symptoms 1. Pain felt in the areas close to the infected paranasal sinus. Sinus pain could present itself as a dull ache in the head above the eyebrows when the frontal sinuses are affected. There will be pain and tenderness felt in the cheek area when the maxillary sinuses are involved.

Dr. A. A. Mundewadi, B.A.M.S., has clinical experience of 22 years and clinical research experience of 9 years. He has published his findings of herbal treatment of HIV / AIDS in 55 patients in the Bombay Hospital Journal, Mumbai, India, July 2005 issue.

Para nasal sinuses are essentially pockets of air spaces in close proximity to the nasal cavity that existed within the bones of the skull and face. They are divided into maxillary sinuses, frontal sinuses, ethmoid sinuses and sphenoid sinuses. When sinusitis occurs, it is the result of inflammation and congestion of the sinus cavities that blocked the mucus from draining.

Sinus infections are one of the most common infections across the world. Sinus attacks are caused by an infection in the sinuses or cavities that are present in the bones near the nose. When there is any swelling in these sinuses because of some infection, breathing becomes difficult, resulting in fever, headaches, and other discomforts. This is known as sinusitis.

Whatever treatment you utilize, remember to drink plenty of water or fluid so that mucus can be drained easily. Smoking is bad for sinusitis as the inhalation of the smoke can give rise to inflammation and worsening the condition. Smoking can increase mucus production and prolong the infection.

2. Nasal congestion and blocked nose. When the sinuses are infected, the mucosa becomes inflamed and this leads to abnormal production of thick mucus which cannot drain off easily.

In combination with the above treatments, try to stay indoors when pollution is bad. As well as when you are sleeping, elevate your head with support pillows to promote healing and effective drainage. The best form of treatment is to keep to a proper diets and exercise.

Sinusitis is termed as "Dushta Pratishyaya" or "Peenas" in Ayurveda. Ayurvedic treatment is effective in both the acute and chronic types of sinusitis.

Recently, there have been many stubborn cases of chronic sinus infection which does not respond well to modern medicine. Find out more about fungal sinusitis and how a simple home remedy for sinus infection can prevent it from happening to you.

5. Fever. A fever usually commences when there is a bacterial infection. Treatment Treatment of acute sinus infection involves prescription drugs to control the symptoms experienced by the patient. To alleviate nasal blockage, decongestants such as pseudoephedrine are prescribed.

A procedure called "Shodhan Nasya" is used, in which medicated oil (Vacha oil, containing Acorus calamus) or Shigru (Moringa oleifera) seed powder or Madanphal (Randia spinosa) powder is put into the nostrils, after giving fomentation to the area surrounding the nose. This helps in draining the sinuses, and contributes to early recovery. For further reduction in sinus inflammation, mild medicated drops are used, such as Anu oil or Panchendriya vardhan oil.

Other essential home remedies that can be useful is the use of humidifier that can reduce dryness that irritate the sinus membranes as well as salt water nasal spray to moisten the nasal passageways so as to be rid of irritants and bacteria. In addition to, sticking to proper diets can be useful too. Medicinal herbs can be effective in strengthening the immune system. As for chronic sinus infection, acupuncture can be helpful and the use of steam two to four times a day can improve circulation.

Acute infection occurs when a mild infection progresses to a more serious stage. This means that the infection has become full blown with the full spectrum of sinus infection symptoms exhibited often making the patient feel really sick.
