Alternative Health Treatments for Nasal Irrigation

The Laryngoscope, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Laryngological, Rhinological and Otological Society, recently published the results of an American study that surveyed 211 patients with different nasal inflammatory conditions, including allergies. The study concluded that the daily use of nasal cleansing with salt water significantly improved many of the parameters of experienced discomfort. It also revealed that nasal irrigation has the potential to improve overall quality of life and is a cost-effective treatment.

These alarm signals cause the body to do certain things in order to protect itself and one of the things is to produce extra mucus. The mucus will take away the caustic nature of the asset and neutralize the damage as well as stop the acid from spreading further up the esophagus. The funny thing is that sometimes when this is happening it actually stops the heartburn symptoms so you might not even know you're having acid reflux!

2. Dr. Josephson strongly emphasizes the use of nasal irrigation. He uses a sinus irrigation device every day, as do I. He also talks about using a neti pot for sinus irrigation, but I've used both and find the irrigator much more effective. I personally would not even recommend the neti pot method.

The Benefits of Using Neti Pots for Nasal Drainage There are many advantages of using natural sinusitis treatment like neti pots that help to drain the nasal of persistent mucus and other gunk. This type of sinusitis treatment cleanses the sinuses of allergens, pollutants, etc. It also helps relieve symptoms of allergic rhinitis, acute bacterial rhinosinusitis and other similar diseases. It is known to prevent the common cold and influenza. Practitioners of this system have noticed that they can often stop an oncoming cold by using neti pots for nasal drainage.

How Most Colds and Allergies Get Started How do you think most colds or allergies get started in your body? Bacteria, viruses, pollen and other pollutants enter your system through your nose, of course. If you wash all this gunk out on a daily basis, it only makes sense that you'll avoid colds, infections, and allergy attacks.

Equivalent amount of powdered clove, ginger, and cayenne pepper ginger mixed with warm water and used to rinse your throat help clear a sore throat and clean the mucus in the sinuses.

Regarding appropriate irrigation technique, the head should be tilted forward over a sink such that when you irrigate one nostril the fluid pours from the other nostril. You should keep your mouth open and try not to swallow while irrigating. For specific irrigation instructions, see the package insert of whichever of the above products you choose for your irrigation purposes.

Other Medications For many people the nasal irrigation system will be enough to control your sinus problems. Those of us with particularly significant sinusitis may need to supplement this with medications, and I use Flonase before going to bed each night as well. If I feel like I'm on the verge of a sinus infection I might take some zyrtec (an antihistimine) or if an infection seems imminent, I have my silver bullet, which is prednisone. I don't use much of the latter, however, as there can be side affects with this steroid. My doctor usually prescribes 10 pills of 20 mg each, and these last for about a year. I never take a whole pill and usually take 5 mg or 10 mg maximum at a time for a day or two. I'm told this is a reasonable amount and nothing to worry about. Speaking of bad side effects, prior to discovering Dr. Grossan's system, sometimes desperate for relief, I used an over-the-counter spray called afrin. The warnings on the label say to use this product for only 4 days or less. This medication can damage the cilia in one's sinuses and cause permanent damage if used too much. As frequent users know, there is also an effect called rebound congestion, so after using it you might end up just as congested as when you started. Thus, people are tempted to continue using it, and it is said to become addictive. Dr. Grossan simply recommends that you throw your afrin into the garbage and stay away from it. I have not used it for years now and am glad to be rid of it.

By implementing this all-natural healing approach you can drastically reduce sinus infections and ear aches in yourself and improve your overall health. Since I have studied natural remedies, my perception of natural health remedies has changed a lot. You see, modern medicine didn't always cure me and the people around me. A healthy body has a strong immune system. It is able to fight off bacterial invasions effectively. One of the best reason, however, may be the fact that herbs and herbal products, continue to provide real health benefits while maintaining a remarkable safety profile. Readily available natural substances were the first medicines used by humans.

1) The Hydro Pulse pulsates at a rate to stimulate your nasal cilia to their best rhythm, restoring the functioning of the cilia. 2) The Hydro Pulse allows you to irrigate both your nose and throat. It is important to irrigate both, particularly since what is in the nose travels down to the throat. Irrigating the throat can bring circulation to the throat, thereby thinning mucus and reducing postnasal drip.

The doctor who pioneered the concept of nasal irrigation in the United States is Dr. Murray Grossan, of Los Angeles, an innovative ENT specialist who created the Grossan Hydro Pulse Nasal-Sinus Irrigation System, which has reportedly sold 400,000 to date. Interestingly, based on feedback, Dr. Grossan estimates 10%, or 40,000, of these purchasers are from empty nose sufferers. You can visit his website at http://www.hydromedonline.com to learn more about the Hydro Pulse. Dr. Grossan needed to find an effective remedy for treating his patients, many of whom did not have much money, without using drugs. I use the Hydro Pulse twice a day, in the morning and evening. It is important to point out the Hydro Pulse has distinct advantages over other irrigation products, such as a neti pot or a bulb syringe (the latter of which can house bacteria):

A new sinus irrigation machine has recently been introduced called the SinuPulse Elite', and I've been using one for several weeks. This article will discuss the machine and the results I've had.

Three guiding principles that can bolster your nasal health are: Principle 1: Keep the nose moist while keeping mucus moving. Principle 2: Maintain good blood supply to the nose.

In the U.S., sinus problems are the #1 reason people see a doctor. With increasing pollution and chemicals in our environment, there is an enormous rise in the number of people who suffer various forms of nasal congestion and respiratory illnesses. If you suffer from sinus symptoms, then you know how the ongoing pain, swelling, congestion and postnasal drip can keep you from fully enjoying life.

Wouldn't it be better to try to find the underlying cause of your sinus misery and do something about that? I mean, if it's allergies, or mold, or something in your diet, or some other environmental factor that's causing your sinus misery-wouldn't it be better to try to figure out what it is and do something about that before you have the surgery?

When I first started seeing an ENT specialist years ago for my sinus problems, I purchased a couple of books on the subject of sinusitis. When I mentioned this to my doctor and asked a couple of questions that showed a bit more knowledge of the subject than most people had, he frowned and had a worried look on his face. He then commented that having only 'a little bit of knowledge was dangerous'. I therefore appreciated the comments by Dr. Josephson in his new book entitled 'Sinus Relief Now- The Groundbreaking 5 Step Program for Sinus, Allergy, and Asthma Sufferers'. He stated: 'If your physician responds negatively to your newfound knowledge or is obviously uncomfortable working with a patient who is well educated about his or her disease, it's another clear signal that it's time to move on' (and find another doctor). I wish I had had this advice at that time, as the doctor eventually performed my first sinus surgery, caused me immense pain, and he didn't improve my situation at all.

Sinus infections affect millions of US resident each year and they still confused about sinus problems until today. Basically sinus infection is an infection of the air passages inside of the nose and the sinuses, which attacks around the eyes, cheeks and nose. Sinus infection also called as sinusitis is usually caused by allergies, cold, deviated nasal septum, nasal polyps, bacterial infection or abnormal growth that is blocking nasal passage. Another cause of recurrent sinus infections is defective immune system. Immunodeficiency issues when you contracted such conditions as myeloma, AIDS, cystic fibrosis, hypothyrodism and even diabetes can result in recurrent sinus infections.

Sinus Operations- Try to Avoid The operations were no fun. After the first one my nose was "packed". This means that in order to stop the bleeding, the ENT specialist/surgeon put a large amount of gauze in my nose, which means that one can only breathe through the mouth for the week or so of recovery time. In other words, swallowing and breathing cannot occur at the same time. This is a good way to lose weight, as one cannot eat much, but it is not a great way to live. At the end of this period, before pulling out the gauze, the doctor said "this will feel like I'm pulling your brains out through your nose". This was the most accurate statement he ever made to me. Pulling what seemed like 6 feet of moist, sticky gauze out of my nose was an almost surrealistically painful sensation. But I thought, "if my deviated septum is now fixed, at least I can look forward to no sinus infections in the future, or at least a lot fewer of them. I was wrong again, as they started coming back after a few months. I changed ENT specialists since the first one put me through tons of pain for no gain. After a couple of years of treatment with this new doctor, I decided to take his advice and try another operation. Among other therapies, I had allergy shots during that time, even though I only tested positive for minor allergies to a couple of things. My nose was not "packed" this time, but there was still plenty of pain. Again my hopes for an infection-free future were dashed when they started up again after a few months. So after two operations by two different ENT specialists, I said "enough is enough". For those considering sinus operations to fix things like a deviated septum, here's my considered advice: don't do it. At least try the nasal irrigation recommended by Dr. Murray Grossan which is explained below before you do. One hears about people who have had 5 or 6 sinus operations, and these either don't work, or if they do cause improvement, it doesn't last very long. Some people have told me that a sinus operation "fixed" their problems, but I am skeptical.

And now that sinus surgery has been around for a while, you can even find lots of people who've had the surgery to or even three times. That's because the symptoms just keep coming back.

Since the solution is going to flow through your nasal cavity, it is possible that the fluid is going to run into your throat. Just in case this happens, simply spit it out.

Nasal irrigation with salt water solution is one good way to unblock stuffed nasal passage. This is done through yogic practice. A ceramic pot, known as a 'neti pot', is filled with a warm salt-water solution and poured through the nose to clear out sinus congestion which is a ideal herbal treatment.

5. Make sure to get enough sleep. Prop yourself up on pillows to restrict sinus drainage from entering your lungs at night. You don't want to get pneumonia,

Principle 3: Relax. A key strategy for Principle 1, keep the nose moist while keeping mucus moving, is nasal irrigation. This is a natural remedy I believe every sinus sufferer must understand and should do. In brief, it consists of rinsing out your nose and sinuses with salt and water. I feel so strongly about nasal irrigation that I believe it must be tried first before considering nose or sinus surgery (unless your situation demands it).

Step One: Prepare the Saline Solution Mix about one pint (or 16 ounces) of lukewarm water with one teaspoon of salt. Then fill the Neti Pot with the saline solution. For some people, putting half a teaspoon of baking soda into the solution makes it gentler on the nose.

The Neti pot has a small spout that fits into the nostril. Simply rotate and tip you head over the sink and pour the solution into your nostril. The fluid rinses through your nasal cavity. After it drains through the other nostril, you spit out the fluid and repeat the process on the other side.

In fact, studies have shown that using such natural sinusitis treatment is as effective as using antibiotics or drug medication. In fact, yoga asana (or postures) and pranayam (or controlled breathing) are other techniques which have been used as natural sinusitis treatments for centuries. Using pranayam and yoga in combination with neti pots for nasal drainage is perhaps one of the most effective natural sinusitis treatments that are prevalent today.

If you are among the 1 in 5 Americans who suffer from sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, acid reflux, asthma, and/or if you have empty nose syndrome, then I encourage you to consider using the treatment strategies discussed in this article, which might just be a starting point for you to take control of your nasal health. Remember, it is you, no one else, who will take control of your health.

How to use the solution You will need a container with a narrow spout, such as a bottle, neti pot, or bulb syringe. Once you have your container, and your saline solution (which should be at a lukewarm temperature), you're ready to go. Follow these simple steps:

You can find them on ebay for less than 25 bucks. I recommend the stainless one so you can put it in the dishwasher. I had one of the plastic jobs and my dishwasher melted it.

How: Drop 1/8 to ¼ cup ACV in a 16 oz of water and drink. Or simultaneously, take 2 Tablespoon of ACV with 8 oz of water Results: It helps to thin the mucous

If you experience nasal irritation or stinging, or any other mild side effects, try to do the following modifications to minimize those unwanted reactions: - reduce the amount of salt in the solution - adjust the frequency of use - change the temperature of the water

Today many opt for herbal medication as seem to give long lasting effect to the treatment than compared to any other treatment in which the infection re occurs.

Grape fruit seed extract is also very good for treating sinus. People with chronic sinus need to keep themselves warm and preferably have warm liquid intake. This will ease their discomfort.

So if you often experience sinus problems together with GERD or acid reflux consider the possibility that the two might be related. It's important any way to treat your acid reflux probably and see a doctor so that you can be diagnosed and put on a treatment plan. You probably also have to make some dietary changes including avoiding spicy foods, fried foods, fatty foods and perhaps even caffeine in combination beverages.

A third key strategy of Principle 1 is proper diet. This strategy might seem self-explanatory, but it cannot be emphasized enough. A number of tips to consider in terms of diet including drinking 8, 8-ounce glasses of water per day; drinking hot tea with lemon and honey, particularly during a time of a cold or sinus infection; eating chicken soup; and eating foods that might be beneficial for sinus health such as vegetables, fresh fruits, spicy foods, wheat products, and foods high in protein. Conversely, foods to avoid include caffeinated products and alcohol, which increase nasal dryness, and tobacco smoke, which worsens the lungs and consequently leads to more breathing difficulties.

As a self-care strategy, it is relatively new in the United States, but is gaining in popularity. It is both a prevention and treatment measure.

10. If you suffer from allergies and it's allergy season, try to give your sinuses a break. Keep your windows closed at night. The peak time for many allergens is between 5 P.M. and 10 A.M.

Another key strategy as part of Principle 1 and that I believe everyone should keep in mind before considering nasal or sinus surgery, except in emergency situations, is to get proper treatment for your allergies. Allergies can lead to enlarged turbinate tissue that can block nasal breathing, so effective treatment for allergies can actually reduce the size of the turbinates, an effect that can be very beneficial. (Please note: the turbinates are very complex structures in the nose with the primary turbinates the size of a finger and they play key roles in heating, humidifying, and filtering air, directing and detecting airflow, and providing 50% of resistance in overall airflow to the lungs.) This treatment might consist of allergy medicine and injections. Allergy injections, for example, have been demonstrated in medical literature to improve the immune system and mucociliary clearance functioning. These are generally administered for 3-5 years for optimal benefit.

The best natural home solutions to cure sinusitis are usually natural products found at home. These products can be used to prevent further complications of sinusitis.

9. You can use hot compresses to relieve some of the swelling and help increase blood flow. This may not be good if you have a sinus headache.

Symptoms The symptoms of sinus infection or sinusitis are nasal discharge, headaches, nasal blockage, pain in the cheek, jaw, ear and neck swelling around the eyes etc. Persistent cold and recurring nasal congestion, loss of sense of taste or smell, cough, headache and face are other symptoms. Toothache and greenish mucus discharge is reported in other cases.

Skeptical At First When something works, you are reluctant to change. Just because a new machine came along, I wasn't ready to jump in with both feet. However, my old machine broke down, and I obviously needed a new one. I wanted to stick with "old faithful", but I had to face the fact that this machine was the second one that broke down on me in a little over a year. The machine was very good, but the salt solution I used must have taken its toll.

Preferable to utilizing a generic bulb syringe however, is the Nasaline nasal irrigator. The Nasaline irrigator consists of a two ounce syringe with a specialized silicone tip designed specifically for nasal irrigation.

Some practitioners recommend "drying" the sinuses at this stage by rapidly breathing in and out through both nostrils. In conclusion, whether you choose Nasaline or the neti pot, you are sure to be satisfied with the results of these natural therapy alternatives and will embrace these alternative health care practices to make a positive change in your health.

Sinus infection, or sinusitis, is an inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages. The sinus cavities which are behind the eyes, forehead, nose and cheekbones get inflamed due to cold or some allergic reaction. People prefer to use home remedies for sinus problems as they are outgrown the allopathic medication which gives not much relief.
